I was not only embarrassed by coworkers but my mother as well. This was one of the worst experiences I’ve had within the comedy industry. I will never go back or recommend this establishment. I couldn’t believe it until they confirmed they were being serious and told us “maybe you can come back tomorrow night”. This was a Tuesday night and we each had one glass of wine.

(Note: that with my experience in comedy I would absolutely never heckle or disrespect another comedian). As we proceeded to the front of the line they pulled us aside and said I was “too intoxicated” to attend and they couldn’t put the comics “at risk”. We continued to talk to multiple guests around us about how cool the comedians were and how we drove 3+ hours to see them. We were also with 2 of my business partners who were behind us in line. The bouncer came up to my 68 year old mother and I and wrote “manager” on our phone bags that we had put on silence and seal closed. This show started at 11:30PM so we were just walking back from dinner. I was definitely hyped up to see 2 of my favorite comics in the line up. Tried to go there with my mother and we were so excited!! (Apparently- “too excited”) We made reservations and got there 30 minutes early. I’ve been doing stand up comedy for 5+ years. The MC was a comedian who creates apps to help the homeless in the daytime and comedy at night, and he was phenomenal! So worth the wait and experience! We had salad and nachos. We enjoyed ourselves - it was an unforgettable New York experience. There was a lineup of about 6 comedians, some were funnier than others but all were pretty good. The room was packed but service was impeccable despite that. But they didn't take anyone who came after that. We had about 10 people in the standby line and almost all of us got in. The bouncers will come to get the standbys by the list. Be sure to be back before the showtime, and line up at the same spot you did before. This place is just a block from Washington Square, so you can go there to wait out the hour (if it's not too late or dark), or grab a quick bite or drink somewhere nearby (lots of pubs and restaurants around). At 50 minutes before the show, they will come by to take down your names and tell you to come back at showtime. Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, and many others have all been known to drop in.If it's too late to make a reservation, don't fret, just show up about 1 hour before the showtime, and the bouncers will show you where to line up (just around the corner) for standby tickets. Hosted by Sony records A&R man Ron Grant, celebrities and amateurs share the microphone on a weekly basis. Masterminded by New York City music impresario Noam Dworman, the “Underground” boasts the most diverse booking policy in the city – the only thing our acts have in common is their quality.

A step up in the rear–where political posters on naked brick walls recall the Village’s radical bohemian past–more tables, ample standing room and a long, polished bar accommodate the crowd. Surrounded by side booths and candle-lit tables, the intimate club’s low stage is bathed in blue light. We like the description that Citysearch has written. Routinely booking acts that usually play rooms 2 or 3 times the size – the “Underground” gives the discerning music lover a chance to see some of the world’s greatest performers in an utterly intimate setting.

The “Village Underground” is the best place to hear live music in New York City.
